Psyched!

Be informed and entertained by our Me, Human host and science panel. Psyched! shows offer a fusion of cabaret of cutting-edge science and audience participation. Because our brains have an evolutionary history that we share much with other animals, sometimes our behavioral responses are not well adapted to the modern world. Psyched! takes an in-depth look at how ancient brains cope in the modern world.

Blah Blah Blah: Saturday, 6pm, Notes
Why did human language take millions of years to emerge, yet babies are born ‘language ready’?

My Friend Fancies You: Sunday, 4pm, Star Pavilion
What is the evolutionary origin of lust and what is its place in the modern world?

Host: Eric Drass

Panel Lead: Professor Gilly Forrester is a Professor of Evolutionary & Developmental Psychology at Birkbeck, the University of London investigating the evolution and development of human cognition. Gilly keeps company with gorillas and small children, studying how our minds and behavior have evolved.

Panelists:

Dr Trudi Edginton is a Reader in Psychology at City, University of London, with research expertise in Cognitive Neuroscience, Neuropsychology assessment, and compassion-focused interventions. She is also a Clinical Psychologist, CBT therapist, EMDR and Mindfulness practitioner.

Professor Catherine Loveday is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Westminster investigating memory and music. She knows why the music from our teenage years stays with us forever. She’s written a guide to the brain, appeared on the radio many times, and once took the stage at the festival to explain why house music makes you feel good.

Professor Natasha Kirkham is a Professor of Psychology at Birkbeck, University of London investigating how children learn– especially in the hurly-burly of the world outside the classroom. She’s interested in the contribution of the different senses to learning.

Psyched Squad

Psyched! also engages a range of early career scientists and volunteers. These individuals assist audience members with the interactive portions of the show, while more experienced squad members deal with data visualization/show-running responsibilities (Dr Numbers, Dr Georgina Donati).
