Formation
A raucous cocktail of pulsating bass grooves, punchy synths and live drums, ‘Pleasure’ is the first calling card of Formation’s evolution as they step towards delivering their debut album later this summer. Thematically, they’re focusing on politically aware themes, but sonically their work with rising, genre-blurring producer Leon Vynehall has sparked a similar period of growth. The productions are more dynamic and detailed than ever before, and brim with the exuberant energy of their live shows.
Consisting of Will Ritson and his twin brother Matt, Formation debuted in the summer of 2014 with a self-released white label EP. Their discography to date – completed by ‘Hangin’, ‘Young Ones’ and the ‘Under The Tracks’ EP – instigated a frenzy of glowing comparisons with like-minded spirits such as Liquid Liquid, ESG and Arthur Russell. Formation’s live band features Will (vocals), Matt (keys), Johnny Tams (bass), Sasha Lewis (keys) and Kai Akinde-Hummel (drums). Formation enthralled audiences with their live performances while on tour with Foals, as well as at festivals including the BBC Introducing stage at Radio 1’s Big Weekend, Latitude, Bestival, The Great Escape, Midi Festival and Calvi On The Rocks.
After a sold-out London show at Corsica Studios, Formation finished 2015 with a nomination for Best New Artist at the NME Awards. They commenced 2016 with another sold-out London show at the ICA and their first trip to America to showcase at SXSW. Formation are now set for a summer of major festivals such as Lovebox, Field Day and Truck. They will also play their biggest London headline show to date at the Village Underground in October.
